Filippo Inzaghi discusses the struggles of Fernando Torres, Philippe Mexes and Marco van Ginkel – and warns Alessandro Del Piero not to go into coaching!

Spanish striker Torres arrived on a two-year loan deal from Chelsea in the summer, but has scored just one goal, and attracted criticism for a string of poor performances.

Meanwhile fellow Chelsea loanee Van Ginkel and Frenchman Mexes have barely featured, with the Dutchman managing just one substitute appearance and the centre-back yet to play.

“I believe in Torres and the way he works,” Inzaghi assured in his pre-match Press conference ahead of the Sampdoria game.

“It just takes patience. He’s coming off a period of not playing, and he needs to get his fitness back. Hopefully he’ll rediscover his scoring touch, starting tomorrow.

“Van Ginkel? He’s done well since he came here. He was injured after [a 2-2 draw with] Empoli, and I wanted to assess him in the Trofeo Berlusconi to see if he has recovered.

“I know I can count on a top player, now that he’s available he could be very useful.

“If he doesn’t start, he might still be important for tomorrow’s game. Then again he might play from the start.

“As for Mexes, he’s always worked hard in training. I have a great relationship with him.

“It’s true that so far I’ve chosen Alex, but Philippe has always shown great ability.

“I know I can rely on a great person and a great player.”

Inzaghi’s former strike partner Alessandro Del Piero will turn 40 on Sunday, and SuperPippo had some words of advice for his former Juventus teammate.

“I wish him [Del Piero] a happy birthday. I’m glad he’s still playing. It’s always nice to remember the good times.

“I’d tell him to think twice before moving into coaching… it’s not easy!” Inzaghi laughed.
