Pippo Inzaghi felt “regret” that Milan only drew 1-1 with Inter and explained how he’s trying to help Fernando Torres.

This was SuperPippo’s first Derby della Madonnina as a Coach and it’s easy to imagine he was tempted to run on to the pitch.

“It’s disappointing to be in the lead, have some clear chances and not win. However, my team gave everything it had and it was a balanced game where Inter did well too,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

Stephan El Shaarawy had the best opportunity to secure victory, but smashed the bar when clear on goal.

“It’s a shame for him, as it would’ve been the ultimate for him to decide a derby. That’s his kind of move, but these things happen – I know I’ve missed them!

“Unfortunately Inter were pushing without making much impact, but they scored on our mistake. We know that we have to grow, but I believe the spirit, hunger and indeed some of our moves were very good.”

Milan and Inter are both mid-table and seem a long way from their target of third place.

“The derby showed there are two teams who are works in progress, still under construction, and so there are going to be peaks and troughs.

“There was a change of Coach, so that gave Inter new enthusiasm. Perhaps there is regret that we didn’t make more of our scoring opportunities, but right now we mustn’t look at the table. We need to look at the character and determination of this team.

“First of all we need everyone back from injury, as with a complete squad we become very competitive. I am happy with the spirit of the team.

“Clearly there was a sense of disappointment in the locker room, as the lads wanted all three points. I knew Inter would push hard and we wanted to go for the second goal, but the idea was to stay compact and go on the counter.

“At the moment when I thought Inter had run out of steam, we conceded this rather fortuitous goal. It could’ve knocked the wind out of our sails, but instead we created another two incredible scoring opportunities.”

Torres had another disappointing Serie A performance, so how long will Inzaghi keep faith with the ex-Chelsea striker?

“It’s my duty to try. I think he worked hard and we had four attacking players to create more up front, so it’s not always easy to support that, but the defenders did very well to cover.

“I believe Torres will soon get back on the scoresheet and I hope so, as we need his goals. I tried to improve the level of quality in attack with players like Honda, Menez, El Shaarawy and Bonaventura to provide better service for him.

“I am trying to put the best team out to get the best out of him. He does well in training, but not every game goes the way it does in training.

“Torres gives his all and I always use the example of Hernan Crespo. Carlo Ancelotti stuck with him when he didn’t score for two months, then when he broke through he never stopped scoring.”
