Stefano Pioli insists Lazio did not fall back in the second half, but rather Inter “pushed very hard and Mateo Kovacic’s great goal changed the game.”

The Aquile had been 2-0 up at half-time, but were pegged back 2-2 by Kovacic and Rodrigo Palacio.

“It’s not that our light went out, more that Inter pushed very hard. It’s a shame, as we should’ve kept the ball more and controlled possession, but Inter were extremely aggressive,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

“Kovacic scored that fantastic goal and it boosted their morale, so we were pegged back even more. The team fought for the whole game, but we should've slowed the tempo and kept the ball better.

“Obviously winning 2-0 at half-time we wanted to win, but we misplaced a few passes, poor clearances and were unable to get the victory.

“Kovacic’s fantastic goal really changed the game, as they have such quality and it got their tails up, giving them hope.

“We were playing at San Siro against an Inter side that was determined not to lose again. We go home with a positive result after another good performance.”

Lazio would’ve gone two points clear in third place if they had won tonight, but are instead locked together in third with Napoli and Sampdoria.

“We have a good position in the table and are content to be in joint third, but we know it is only a stepping stone. We said from the start our objective was to finish in the top five. If we look back to where we started and what happened last season, the team has worked very well to be here.

“Now we need to recharge our batteries and go forward into January with more important games.”
