Walter Zenga reveals that the shape of his new Sampdoria will depend on the transfer market, and discusses his ambitions.

The former Palermo Coach was officially presented as the new Blucerchiati head, and he was not shy of discussing tactics this early.

“The formation poses an interesting problem,” he said. “I can play with the 4-3-3 or with any other system, but it will depend on what the transfer market lets us do.

“We'll certainly have a core formation, but we'll also have some intelligent players who can switch things over the course of a match.

“Every Coach starts the season hoping to win all the time. Our objective is to stay in the left half of the standings and make one more point than last season.

“In the past I opened negotiations with certain Italian teams but I opted for a different path,” he said, in reference to his five years of experience coaching in the UAE Arabian Gulf League.

“Now, the time has come for me to return. I have no vendettas to take on anyone.

“I believe in myself very strongly. I've coached in more than 450 international games.

“This was the right time to come back and I've been fortunate in that I found a club that I like. Now it's my turn.”

Zenga was also asked about his President Massimo Ferrero and the former Sampdoria Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic.

“I like people like Ferrero, who tell you what they think without beating around the bush.

“I'm not surprised that people advise him to keep being himself and not let himself be changed.

“But what people say about other situations doesn't interest me, I have to answer for myself.

“I haven't spoken with Mihajlovic. What he did in the previous championship is under everyone's eyes.

“Here in Serie A, I'm getting back in touch with many friends. When you have friends you respect them, so if I get to speak with him I'll listen.

“The team's staff? This is another of the many aspects we considered.

“I like sharing my decisions with the club. The club is more important than me and I can't take my decisions all by myself.

“I wanted a team of staff that had affinity between them and were motivated, driven to take risks from the first day.

“In any case I consider the human relationship to be the most important thing. The man comes first, then the footballer.

“Without that kind of relationship there's no point in getting started.

“Our strategy will be easy to put in place, but I've got to know my players first.

“You can't start on an idea without knowing exactly what your players are like.”
