Rudi Garcia explained the wildly different Roma performances against Barcelona and Valencia after a 3-1 win at the Mestalla.

It was a completely different performance to their 3-0 defeat against Barcelona on Wednesday evening.

“Against Barcelona we decided to defend, but today we wanted to play great football, attack and score goals against an excellent Valencia side who will soon face Monaco in the Champions League play-off.

“I am satisfied in general. There were some things we could’ve done better,” said the Coach in a Press conference.

“I’m happy with my squad, although we gave away possession a few too many times, such as on the Valencia goal. We got a bit too complacent at times, trying nutmegs or chips in the final third, and paid for those errors.

“Overall I liked the attitude and the lads were protagonists both attacking and defending. I liked the high pressing, which made life difficult for Valencia.”

Garcia was asked whether Wojciech Szczesny or Morgan De Sanctis is first choice goalkeeper this season, but kept both hanging.

“De Sanctis was meant to play tonight, but he was not 100 per cent fit. Wojciech had a great game, we know he’s not only a great goalkeeper, but also an extra player on the ball.

“Nothing is decided on who will start in goal against Verona. I don’t think I’ll make that decision for a while yet.”

“We suffered a little in defence down the flanks, but that was to be expected as Valencia are very strong there with Feghouli and Gaya.”

Garcia was asked how new signing Dzeko will fit tactically into the side and whether Roma will change their 4-3-3 formation.

“Dzeko plays for the team and that is one of his great qualities. I prefer to have two great champions than one. I hope all season to have the problem of choosing between many fine options.”
