Sassuolo resigned Inter to last place in the Trofeo TIM as Gregoire Defrel secured a 1-0 win for the Neroverdi.

The match failed to live up to the pulsating standards set in Milan’s opening 2-1 win over the Nerazzurri, as it got off to a slow start.

Marcello Gazzola and Matteo Politano had early efforts for the Neroverdi, with the first going straight at Carrizo and the second flying narrowly wide.

However, Defrel put the hosts in front after 23 minutes when he burst past a static offside trap before calmly slotting beyond Juan Carrizo.

Rodrigo Palacio blazed a long-range effort well over the bar as Roberto Mancini’s side whimpered out of the competition.

The defeat ensured that Inter finished bottom of the three-team group on their first appearance in the tournament since 2012.
