Pepe Reina believes Napoli can win the Scudetto under Maurizio Sarri. “He got us in the heart and the brain.”

The goalkeeper returned to the Stadio San Paolo after a year at Bayern Munich, though he had popped back into the city many times purely as a fan.

“I can feel the respect and affection here, I know people love me,” Reina told the Corriere dello Sport.

“I put in my end too. My family and I really missed this city and I missed the game, so I immediately said yes to this new project.”

Napoli have won seven of their last eight games in all competition, scoring 24 goals and conceding only three.

“We are experiencing this moment with the calm of knowing more difficult times will come. The secret to a winning side is to consider every game a challenge.

“Right now our objective is just Sunday’s match with Chievo, we won’t get lulled into other situations or ever look at the next fixture on the list.

“This is a wide open Serie A tournament and seven or eight teams could win the Scudetto. Juventus are there, obviously, then Roma and Inter.

“There’s also Napoli, Fiorentina, Milan, Lazio and the Sassuolo of my friend Paolo Cannavaro.”

Napoli players have been full of praise for Coach Sarri, especially compared to the often frosty rapport with Rafa Benitez.

“A Coach has to get you in the heart as well as the brain – and Sarri achieved that,” continued Reina.

“He did it by sending direct messages and teaching us football. He is a leader and talks to you while looking you straight in the eye.

“We needed a little time to understand his football, but now that we’ve grasped his ideas, we’re doing very well indeed.

“This is a real squad, which managed to resist getting influenced after the first negative results.”
