The Champions League tie kicks off on Wednesday at 19.45 GMT and neutrals hope for a repeat of the extraordinary 4-4 draw last time out.

“Tomorrow the players must keep their guard up and work hard to get the result we’re hoping for,” said Schmidt in his Press conference at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

“Bayer’s characteristics are of an attacking and spectacular style of football. These qualities will be on show tomorrow so we can achieve second place in the group.

“Away from home the games are different, so we must be more careful at the back, but we certainly won’t clam up. We’ll continue to play a very open game.

“We know that Roma have players with great technique and take into account that unfortunately we will run a few risks with our attacking strategy, but we’ll give our best to contain them.

“Javier Hernandez is settling in more and more, getting better with every game. He’s scoring regularly and will continue to score in important matches.

“Edin Dzeko gave a lot of support to the Roma squad before his injury and will slowly improve.”

Bayer Leverkusen knocked Roma’s city rivals Lazio out of the Champions League in the preliminary round and the Derby della Capitale is in Serie A on Sunday.

“Their style of football is very different. Lazio cannot be compared to Roma, as they are a good team, but have nothing in common with the Giallorossi. Roma are more dynamic.”
