The former Manchester City man is now on Roberto Mancini’s staff and admits some of the criticism is justified.

“We know Inter aren’t playing very well and Roberto was the first to say we want to do better, but meanwhile we are winning,” he told Tuttosport newspaper.

The Nerazzurri are joint top of the table with Fiorentina despite scoring only 12 goals in 12 rounds, their least prolific start to a campaign since 1994-95.

“Mancini is a winner. He knows that he is strong and therefore is not jealous of people around him or his opponents. I’ve worked with four or five managers and I can say you notice this straight away.

“He knows what he wants and will tell you to tour face what he thinks. He is intelligent and good at dealing with the group.”

Inter tried and failed to coax Yaya Toure away from Manchester City in the summer and turned to Geoffrey Kondogbia instead.

“He has very different characteristics to Yaya, because at the age of 22 Toure was already very strong technically and had a great shot from distance.

“Kondogbia might not have those qualities now and I don’t know whether he will do in five or six years, but he’ll certainly be one of the best midfielders in the world.

“Geoffrey’s performances changed over the last few games, he is more aggressive and is getting to understand how Italian football works. At times we put him on the bench to protect him from the media and he realises that.”
