Gian Piero Gasperini defends Genoa's performance in the 2-1 defeat to Carpi: 'But we take get far too many red cards'.

The Grifone's Leonardo Pavoletti was sent off after deliberately elbowing defender Riccardo Gagliolo, making it the seventh time this season that his team went down to ten men.

“We have to remedy these situations,” Gasperini told Sky Sports Italia. “If you're already down to ten men after five minutes and you spend the remaining 85 playing with one man down, then of course you'll suffer the consequences. It really is too much.

“In many ways the performance was good, but it's natural we'd lose strength and energy towards the end.

“We played well for a long time, but we paid the consequences of the red card. Pavoletti is important for us, explaining his gesture is hard as the rival defender was tackling him normally.

“I don't understand, it was such a favourable moment for him and for the team. It really is something heavy.

“We're always commendable for our effort but there have been too many red cards due to stupidity, if we may use that term.

“Today, once again, we didn't suffer when were down by a man and we played well. But I find it hard to justify a red card like that.

“[Sebastian] De Maio? I saw nothing special in his reaction when he was subbed off. He was unhappy, but that's normal. He wasn't able to play to his levels and a measure of disappointment is legitimate.”
