The minnows are in their first ever top flight campaign, but seem to have found their stride, unbeaten in three with two consecutive victories.

On the other hand, third-placed Inter have amassed only four points in the same period.

“That’s bad for us, because they’ll be even more fired up than usual,” Castori told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Carpi have got back to playing the way we did in Serie B, quickly and with through balls to attack the space. I find possession football to be boring and if it’s done with lots of horizontal passes in defence then it’s futile too.

“Those who tried to copy Barcelona’s tiki-taka without the same quality players only caused trouble. It’s not an issue of system so much as mentality. A young team like ours can make the difference only if it runs more than the opposition. I am convinced a side that picked up 80 Serie B points last season can secure Serie A safety.”

Castori had been fired, but recalled a month later after things did not improve under Giuseppe Sannino. With his return, director of sport Sean Sogliano was axed.

“With the old directors we got 18 new players, 13 of them foreign, who were not up to Serie A standard or at the very least didn’t suit my idea of football.

“In all honesty, I didn’t understand the attitude of the club, as suddenly there was no faith in me. Things were fixed later on.

“After my return, we also adjusted the training and fitness regime. With me you work very hard in training and it took at least 15-20 days to reach our peak. It’s fundamental that now the team has eight out of 11 who were with us a year ago.”
