The Coach caused controversy in his Press conference yesterday when suggesting only five teams in Europe played genuinely good football: Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

“Roberto didn’t intend to criticise our team,” Zanetti told Mediaset Premium today.

“I agree that there are more than five teams who play great football. For example, in our League there are Napoli, Empoli and Fiorentina, while in other countries there are sides that play the beautiful game.

“We are building a team that we hope can be consistent in terms of performance and results.

“We have a lot of faith in Roberto’s work and always proved that. The most important thing now is to focus on the games that remain this season, then we’ll have time to think of other matters.”

There are reports Mancini will not attend tomorrow’s annual meeting between referees and Serie A Coaches, further fuelling his criticism of officials.

“I don’t know if Roberto will go. During the season there are positive and negative incidents and you have to make your voice heard.

“We also all need to show good common sense out of respect for football, which is the most important thing.”
