As UEFA's Executive Committee introduces GLT technology to European competitions, FIFA are also rewriting football's rulebook.

After the International Board's reform, which will kick in from Euro 2016, there will be new rules regarding fouls and red cards.

A foul on a running striker committed by the last man of the defence will no longer result in a direct red card and suspension, unless the foul is violent or consists in a hand-ball in the box. As long as the foul is judged to be an honest attempt at taking the ball, the defender will only be shown a yellow card.

Hand-balls in open play will only result in a booking if they interrupt significant plays.

Another rule that is being tinkered with, though only speculatively for now, is that of substitutions. The International Board is considering the option of allowing a fourth substitution during a game's extra time.

According to Calcio e Finanza, there is the possibility that this rule may eventually be extended to the game's full time, and even extended to the point that five substitutions would be possible during the game's 90 minutes.

This would have a huge effect on the way the game is played tactically, so the decision is still being pondered.
