Stefano Pioli explained his tactical choices as Lazio fought back for a 1-1 Europa League draw away to Sparta Prague.

“We wanted to get a small advantage from the first leg away from home and we did that. We’re strong at home, but Sparta Prague are not to be underestimated on their travels either,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We started the game well and had some good chances, but were caught too open on their goal. The positive thing is the reaction we had, showing real character.

“Now we can look ahead to the second leg, which will also be very balanced. It is only a small advantage, but we have what it takes to qualify over two legs.”

After dropping them repeatedly, Pioli started Antonio Candreva and Keita Balde Diao.

“I am happy with their attitude and contribution. I picked a very attack-minded line-up because I wanted to send a message to our opponents, that we would attack them with the pace of our forwards. I didn't want us to be remissive here.

“I am a little worried by some of the injury problems we had tonight and will try to get some of them ready to play next Thursday.”

Abdoulay Konko went off injured at half-time, then his replacement Dusan Basta limped off 20 minutes later. The game ended with Milan Bisevac and Stefan Radu hobbling, as the substitutions had been completed.

For the second time this season, Lazio’s game was halted by the referee due to racist chanting, this time aimed at Sparta Prague defender Costa.

“Their player complained about these chants from our fans. In all honesty I didn’t hear anything, as I was concentrated on the game,” said Pioli.
