According to Italian papers, Sunderland must pay Inter €10.5m for Ricky Alvarez after FIFA arbitration.

The matter has been dragging on for over a year, as Inter loaned Alvarez to Sunderland in September 2015 with an option to buy that would become mandatory if the club stayed in the Premier League.

The Black Cats successfully avoided relegation, but then refused to pay because of injury problems that meant Alvarez made only 17 competitive appearances for them, scoring one goal.

Inter took the issue to FIFA arbitration and La Gazzetta dello Sport today assures the Nerazzurri have won their case.

That was also helped by Sampdoria, as Alvarez joined the Blucerchiati as a free agent in January and has been playing regularly without fitness concerns.

Sunderland are expected to lodge another appeal, but Inter want the money in July so they can reinvest on the transfer market.
