The Neroverdi retained sixth place with a 1-0 victory at the Matusa, the result that mathematically relegated Frosinone.

Despite that situation, the Canarini were applauded at the final whistle and the crowd chanted ‘Thank you, lads.’

“The Frosinone fans set an example for supporters all over Italy and indeed the world,” Di Francesco told Sky Sport Italia.

“They showed great sportsmanship and in an exasperated world like ours, it was beautiful to see them appreciate that effort doesn’t necessarily mean victory, but it means a professional attitude.

“Every team struggled here and we had several dangerous situations, especially in the first half, while Frosinone had excellent long balls and physicality in the air.

“We are playing with many youngsters and they are not accustomed to this sort of situation. I compliment them on their attitude.”

Sassuolo could well qualify for the Europa League in sixth place, but only if Milan lose the Coppa Italia Final to Juventus.

“Today I read a paper about the Leicester story and I got emotional. It’s amazing what can be achieved if you plan ahead and have those elements that fit into place.

“It’s a long way off saying we can win the Scudetto, as that would be magical, but it gives you hope that a small club without spending millions can achieve great things.

"We don't want to sign big stars, as we prefer to create them in-house."
