Joao Mario had put the hosts in front this afternoon before Federico Melchiorri scored one and forced Samir Handanovic to concede another in the 2-1 result.

“I chose to use Melchiorri today rather than Marco Borriello because I knew Inter would push forward more than usual,” the tactician told Sky Sport Italia.

“They’d push up the full-backs, use Joao Mario as a trequartista, so we found space to go on the counter and in these situations Federico is a master.

“In the first half we were too deep, but saw a different Cagliari after the break. We worked on the Inter defects and studied them carefully. It is a team with a great deal of quality, a huge amount of quality, but no balance, so we worked on that.

“Davide Di Gennaro played as a trequartista, where he gives his best and doesn’t get bogged down by having to cover the defence. He was involved in all our positive moves.”
