The versatile Italy international was stretchered off in agony during tonight’s 3-1 victory away to Sassuolo and replays show his left knee visibly buckling.

As he went off, the player in tears told Coach Luciano Spalletti he felt as if he’d ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament – which would be five to six months out.

“There was this violent sprain on the posterior section of the left knee. The player felt extreme pain that continued even after the game,” chief Roma medic Riccardo Del Vescovo told Sky Sport Italia.

“It is always difficult to evaluate at this stage, but we can consider two positive elements – the knee is not excessively swollen and the anterior cruciate ligament at this moment seems relatively stable.

“Mind you, that could be because the pain is so strong that he cannot feel specific ligament movements.

“When he returns to Rome, we will perform a series of tests to rule out fractures or meniscus ligaments.”

Ironically, Florenzi’s injury occurred just a few minutes after Roma defender Antonio Rudiger made his comeback from five and a half months out following ACL surgery.
