The versatile Italy international was stretchered off in agony during the 3-1 win at Sassuolo on Wednesday evening and went under the knife yesterday.

Florenzi is expected to be out of action for anything between four and six months.

“He is so good at replacing everyone that he becomes irreplaceable,” said Roma Coach Spalletti in today’s Press conference.

“We need the entire team to give more to fill in for him. Aside from his stratospheric form, he was the solution to every problem. Put him in attack, he gives you the same quality going forward and the same substance as an extra midfielder.

“Put him in defence and he can go one-on-one with players like Lorenzo Insigne without fear, taking the ball off him. Do that and you have all the credentials to be a top defender.

“Right now, replacing Florenzi is impossible for us. Unfortunately that’s the way things went and the rest of the squad must sacrifice themselves to make up for this.

“I went to visit him last night and we spent a couple of hours together. I had already phoned him up on Thursday and we joked that he wanted to take part in training the next morning.

“I saw him in great psychological shape yesterday, as he was already talking about when he’d be back. Considering that, I think he can anticipate the predicted return date.”
