The hosts protested repeatedly during the Champions League game, particularly for the Franco Vazquez second booking and penalty for a shirt tug on Leonardo Bonucci.

“We lost against a strong opponent, but they were also fortunate in the incidents,” Pareja told Spanish reporters.

“The Vazquez red card was exaggerated, because he didn’t deserve a second yellow. The referee wiped out our work with two decisions that channelled the match in a certain direction.

“The penalty seemed very dubious to me, because I was marking Patrice Evra, not Bonucci, but frankly the shirt tug did not seem excessive."

Coach Jorge Sampaoli was sent off for dissent and referee Clattenburg needed a police escort to leave the pitch at half-time and the final whistle.

“Now we must put this game behind us and focus on Lyon, as we absolutely must qualify.”
