Genoa scraped past Nocerina 4-3 on Alberto Malesani's debut, while Sampdoria went out and Verona played another goal-packed Coppa Italia thriller.
The biggest club to play on Saturday in the Third Round of the Coppa Italia was Genoa, who took to the field at Marassi.
It was far from an easy task to get the better of newly-promoted Serie B side Nocerina, as it was only decided deep into stoppages.
Rodrigo Palacio bagged a brace, but Nocerina kept coming back into it and went from 3-1 down to 3-3 at the 87th minute.
It seemed to be heading for extra time when Kakha Kaladze popped up with the decisive goal, as Genoa won 4-3.
Elsewhere, Sampdoria crashed out at the first hurdle in a 2-1 defeat to Empoli.
Antonio Busce's opener was wiped out by Nicola Pozzi, but Francesco Tavano converted a penalty at the 78th minute to send Empoli through.
Verona had another thriller away to Sassuolo, as they fought back three times to draw 3-3 at the 93rd minute with Ferrari.
There were no further goals in extra time, so it went to penalties and Verona qualify 7-5.
