Cesare Prandelli criticised his Italy side for being “a little slow” and inefficient, but held on to the points in the Faroe Islands.
“We tried to build and were perhaps a little slow, while we should've made more of our chances,” said the Coach after their 1-0 win.
“Anything can happen at international level, but we were always focused.”
Antonio Cassano scored the winner after 10 minutes, but the Faroes hit the woodwork twice.
“We lacked a bit of organisation and the final pass. The rain and the pitch didn't make it easy, but with such midfield domination, you've got to be more effective.
“The wingers should've put the ball deeper, but this is fine. Should Mario Balotelli have gone on earlier? Maybe, but we got the result.”
Slovenia lost 2-1 at home to Estonia, while Northern Ireland fell 1-0 in Belfast to Serbia, so Italy are practically qualified.
“It's not done yet, just as this game seemed easy on paper, but on the field it was anything but.”
