Marco Tronchetti Provera and Sandro Mazzola forgive Inter for ruling Diego Forlan out of the Champions League. “It can happen.”
President Massimo Moratti was said to be furious when it emerged Forlan was ineligible for the tournament until January, having featured in the preliminary round of the Europa League for Atletico Madrid.
It was originally believed he would be able to play, but the fact Atletico qualified makes him cup-tied.
“These things can happen. Only those who do nothing fail to make mistakes,” insisted director Tronchetti Provera.
“Besides, it would've been worse had Forlan been ruled out for the whole season. The situation will be resolved in January and it will encourage fans to come see him at the stadium in Serie A.”
Former Nerazzurri legend Mazzola was also eager not to apportion blame for this administrative howler.
“It can happen, as we were at the end of the transfer session and things were rushed through, so this small detail wasn't noticed,” he told Calciomercato.it.
“It's up to the President to decide, but I wouldn't take disciplinary action against Marco Branca and Piero Ausilio, as they've done a great job on the market over the last few years.”
