Marino: 'Mentality will save Atalanta'

Atalanta technical director Pierpaolo Marino believes that the club's strong mentality will be key to its survival bid this season.

The former Napoli sporting director was talking in the midst of Atalanta's preparations for their trip to Lecce, where a win would see them move into a positive points tally.

A draw and win from their opening two games has left the team on -2 points, after they began the campaign with a points deduction in light of a betting scandal.

"To be saved, given the unique situation, we must have the mentality to compete against all of our opponents. And with Genoa and Palermo we did not fail.

"Do not forget that after the game at Marassi, the Ligurian club made up for it with a win at Lazio. The same goes for Palermo, who were fresh from victory over Inter."

Marino was also keen to suggest Stefano Colantuono's influence has been key to the Orobici's positive start to the season.

"The skill of our Coach is to look through the project's players and create an Atalanta from the staff available.

"Having lowered the average age of the squad from last season, it also becomes easer for the Coach to have the players pulling on his side.

"I see that as I constantly follow training and see the commitment it takes. Colantuono is growing fast as a Coach in Bergamo."

Marino then looked towards the team's trip to fellow relegation candidates Lecce, and reflected on what their win at the weekend means for Wednesday's clash.

"In their home town it will be very hard because we now meet an antagonist with sky high morale after their coup at Bologna. But still, we will work hard."
