Edy Reja and his assistant Coach left Lisbon believing that Lazio's defeat to Sporting was undeserved on two accounts.
Reja replaced Djibril Cisse with Tommaso Rocchi in the starting line-up and saw both Rocchi and Abdoullay Sonko miss clear-cut chances in a 2-1 defeat to the 10-man Portuguese.
However, the Coach refused to hold his players responsible.
"This is a defeat that leaves a bad taste in the mouth. We tried to win and came close on several occasions. Unfortunately we have an undeserved defeat.
"The lads cannot believe they didn't win, the dressing room is completely dispirited."
His assistant Coach Giovanni Lopez agreed that the referee's performance influenced proceedings, and suggested luck also played its part.
"The goal came 23 seconds beyond injury time. Edy was expelled only because he pointed out to the referee that he had blown late in the first half.
"In addition to managing the negativity of the referee is to report our inaccuracy in front of goal. There were errors by [Giuseppe] Sculli and Rocchi, but we were also unlucky. Unfortunately this is an unlucky moment were we have been punished by the first mistake."
