Reports in Italy are starting to suggest that Antonio Cassano may need surgery to correct a possible heart defect.
The Italy striker has been in hospital since Saturday night after feeling unwell on the flight home after Milan's 3-2 win at Roma.
The Rossoneri are set to release an official statement regarding the player's condition later today, but that hasn't stopped the speculation regarding a possible diagnosis.
Although the forward is showing signs of improvement, he is still undergoing a series of tests amid fears that he suffered a transient ischemic stroke at the weekend.
Numerous media outlets in the peninsula on Wednesday are claiming that the various examinations so far have found a small issue with his heart.
The speculation adds that the problem could be resolved with a small operation and, if all goes well, he could resume his playing career.
Cassano had made a promising start to the season with his club and country.
Although not guaranteed a starting shirt at his club, Cassano is firmly in the plans of Italy boss Cesare Prandelli ahead of Euro 2012.
