Aurelio De Laurentiis has called on Napoli to end the year in the right way and to recover their League position before February’s return to Europe.
Walter Mazzarri’s men were held to a 1-1 draw on Sunday evening by 19th-place Novara. Whilst Napoli kept hold of fifth spot in the table, it was the club’s fourth draw from their last five games and the latest game to see them drop points against a side they were otherwise expected to beat.
Combined with Lazio’s win over Lecce in Week 15, it means Napoli are now seven points behind them and Milan who share third place on 28 points.
Subsequently, Napoli President De Laurentiis has signposted the Azzurri’s remaining fixtures of the year as important matches to win and also reiterated that until February, the team can only think about improving their League position.
“Now we must face Roma and Genoa in the right way to end the year in the best way. After the break we will continue to think about the League, starting to play in the Coppa Italia and waiting for the Champions League.
“Before that though we must recover the dropped points in the League because so far we have been distracted by Europe.”
The Partenopei are in the Champions League advanced knockout stages for the first time in their history, with the draw determining their Last 16 opponents coming this Friday. However, De Laurentiis suggests the club do not have preferences on who to be paired with.
“I have no preference, for us everything is an experience. Even the weaker teams can become barriers, as was what happened yesterday in Novara.”
