Silva makes UEFA team

Thiago Silva is Italy’s only representative in UEFA’s Team of the Year for 2011, which was announced earlier today.

The Brazilian lost out to Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic and Barcelona’s Gerard Pique in the FIFA World XI that was unveiled earlier this month during the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or gala.

However, where that was the result of votes cast by his fellow professionals, UEFA’s team has been chosen based on 4.5m votes cast by visitors to the organisation’s website.

The Milan centre-back is the only representative from Italy in another award that was otherwise dominated by names from Spain’s Primera Division.

UEFA.com's Team of the Year:

Coach: Josep Guadiola

Team: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid); Dani Alves (Barcelona), Gerard Pique (Barcelona), Thiago Silva (Milan), Marcelo (Real Madrid); Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich), Xavi Hernandez (Barcelona), Gareth Bale (Tottenham); Andres Iniesta (Barcelona); Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
