Inter President Massimo Moratti has thanked Rafa Benitez for his work at the club, but admits that a split was inevitable.
Inter parted with Benitez by mutual consent this afternoon after a week of feverish speculation regarding his future.
The straw that broke the camel's back came when Benitez demanded four or five new signings after winning the Club World Cup.
"I am sorry for the end of the relationship, but by now we couldn't go any further forward.
"As for the future of the Inter bench, the names that are going around at the moment are all interesting."
Former Milan boss Leonardo is reportedly the favourite to replace Benitez.
