Lazio look set to sign Zenit St. Petersburg defender Fernando Meira in the January transfer window, according to reports in the Italian Press.
The Portugal international has just won the Russian Premier League, but wasn't used all that much and would like to leave.
His contract expires in December 2011, but Il Corriere dello Sport understands Zenit are prepared to let him walk away for free a year in advance.
Lazio had already considered making an offer for Meira in August, only they were put off when Zenit asked for a couple of million.
Edy Reja would like to upgrade the quality of his central defenders as he only has confidence in Andre Dias and Giuseppe Biava.
Meira has Champions League experience and 54 caps for Portugal too.
