Juventus patron John Elkann caused shockwaves by blasting Gianluigi Buffon. “He hasn't been playing for around a year and a half...”
The goalkeeper was out of action for nine months following back surgery, but his form has been disappointing since returning to the field.
“Buffon? He hasn't been playing for around a year and a half...” commented Elkann when asked by journalists during a publicity event in Siena this morning.
That can be read as a huge insult towards the shot-stopper, who has looked a shadow of his former self.
This week Buffon himself declared he wanted to stay at Juventus despite a reported offer from the new American Roma, but Elkann's comments suggest the club is not so sure it wants to keep him.
Elkann is President of Exor, the Agnelli family business that is majority shareholder in Juventus. He was also asked about other rumours surrounding the club.
“Will Gigi Del Neri be the Coach next season? I don't understand all this controversy. Don't you like him?
“As for Karim Benzema, he is a great player, but it is not just one man who manages to make a great team.”
