Fiorentina co-owner Andrea Della Valle has announced that he is “to take a step back and step aside”, citing an “unhealthy” atmosphere at the club.

The Della Valle family have owned Fiorentina since 2002, when they saved the club from extinction, but there have been growing voices of discontent from fans, concerned by the Viola’s perceived stagnation and a lack of investment.

“What happened against Sassuolo is still in my head and I’ve been reflecting on so many situations that I just can’t accept,” Andrea told Radio Bruno Toscana.

“The Della Valle family are in their 15th year of owning Fiorentina. I’ve given so much happiness to Florence, yet I find himself in an unhealthy contradiction, such as what’s happened this year, which I didn’t expect.

“The moment has come for me to take a step back and step aside. Fiorentina are well managed by everyone in each role, by Antognoni, Corvino, Cognigni, Salica.

“But I can’t do it anymore, I’ve lived through [my time here] with my heart and money, so much money, but there’s a poise that I no longer feel in the city.

“I need to be a little detached because [the situation] doesn’t make me feel good and, above all, I don’t understand the logic [of what’s going on].

“Giving sixth place to Milan with our defeats against Empoli and Palermo was a disappointment, but the teams that are at our level in terms of budget are always far below us.

“Bernardeschi? These are things that Corvino will mull over. I won’t be at the Franchi for the last game of the season.”
