The best

The Old Lady cannot face fellow Pot 1 teams Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Monaco, Spartak Moscow, Benfica or Shakhtar Donetsk.

They also cannot be drawn against another Italian side, so can only face Tottenham Hotspur, Basel, Olympiakos, Anderlecht Besiktas or Liverpool from Pot 3.

Gianluigi Buffon has said he’d like to face Scottish champions Celtic, while RB Leipzig are the bottom ranked side in Pot 4.

Best scenario by UEFA coefficient: Juventus, Manchester United, Besiktas, RB Leipzig

At 16th, Manchester United are the lowest-ranked of the Pot 2 sides if going by coefficient, though many would argue Porto or Sevilla would represent a more favourable draw.

Pot 3’s lowest-ranked side is Liverpool, but two English teams cannot be drawn together so Besiktas at 34th are the most favourable opponent on paper.

In Pot 4, RB Leipzig’s European debut sees them ranked as the lowest side, but as representatives of the Bundesliga they may actually be more of a threat than APOEL Nicosia, NK Maribor or Qarabag.

The worst

Worst scenario by UEFA coefficient: Juventus, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic

They may have sold Neymar this summer, but Barça are ranked as the third-best side in Europe by UEFA.

Juventus beat them 3-0 over two legs on the way to the final last year, but on paper a clash with the Catalonians is the worst possible outcome for the Bianconeri.

Given that Napoli are out of the equation, Premier League runners-up Tottenham would be the nightmare draw from Pot 3.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool also lurk in Pot 3, a potentially fiery fixture given the animosity surrounding the Heysel Stadium disaster.

According to the rankings, Celtic would be the worst draw from Pot 4 though they failed to win a single match in last year’s group stages.

Sporting CP are also likely to be tough opponents, while no opponent will relish a trip to face CSKA Moscow.
