Marek Hamsik said the 3-2 victory over Sampdoria was “a six-pointer as Inter lost to Sassuolo,” so Napoli can break away with his record-breaking goal.

“The important thing is that we won while suffering, as it’s a victory that counts for even more, because Inter lost today as well,” Hamsik told Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s practically a six-pointer. We used up a lot of energy to get the game back on track, but fortunately we brought home the result.”

The winning goal was also Hamsik’s 116th in the Napoli jersey, surpassing Diego Maradona’s record of 115.

“The record is nice and I have already received a gift, my friends made me shin-pads with 116 on it, but my first thought was that we were winning the game after going behind twice.

“I am happy, but I still can’t get my head round this record. I worked hard with my head down to get back to my level, Napoli are doing well and that’s all that matters.

“This was a fundamental victory after a series of results that didn’t go our way. Napoli proved we are back, as we got the win when struggling and down to 10 men.”
