Sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli makes it clear Milan won’t buy anyone this month, but insists “we didn’t overpay for anyone” in the summer.

The Rossoneri revolutionised their squad over the summer with a huge spending spree, but they’re already 12 points off a Champions League place.

The Rossoneri revolutionised their squad over the summer with a huge spending spree, but they’re already 12 points off a Champions League place.

Doubts about owner Yonghong Li saw UEFA reject a voluntary agreement on Financial Fair Play, so there won’t be investment in the team in the January transfer window.

“Updating remains a constant factor,” Mirabelli told Gazzetta dello Sport when asked if he’ll be on holiday this month.

“This weekend, for example, I’ll be in Germany to watch some games. I’m talking about updating though, not the transfer market.

“We won’t do anything, I’ll tell you that as official information. There could be some outgoings, but these will be small things.

“Of the names that are circulating, the one who has the most concrete offers is Gustavo Gomez.

“I ask you, after buying 11 players do you think taking a 12th would be the right thing to do? We had a good transfer campaign in the summer but I don’t have nostalgia for that, there’s time for everything.

“Right now I’m thinking of the solutions we already have, for example [Riccardo] Montolivo. Our imperative is to enhance the existing squad.

“We are and we will be within the UEFA parameters. Our construction machine will move forward, with no worries.

“I don’t have doubts about anything, the money arrives as it should and then there’s David Han Li who is very present and a great connoisseur of football.

“He also has the advantage of never interfering in the work of others.”

Mirabelli was asked if the Diavolo had spent recklessly in the summer, given the trouble the team appears to be having with integration.

“The figures don’t seem excessive to me. Everyone considers the total outlay, but I invite you to separate and analyse it.

“We didn’t overpay for anyone and I’ll tell you something more: if, in theory, we put some of our new buys on the market we would make money on them.

“I consider them all to be valid players who form a solid group and give us peace of mind for the future.

“They’re the solid centre of Milan and although many of them aren’t living up to expectations there are no flops.

“And don’t forget we brought in a good amount from sales, and then look at who renewed their contracts: [Gigio] Donnarumma, [Patrick] Cutrone, [Davide] Calabria, [Alessandro] Plizzari.

“Gigio renewed with great joy and has always expressed his desire to remain at Milan. We’d be very happy if he renewed his career there.

“The moment he didn’t want to stay – which isn’t the case now – we’d favour an exit. No-one stays reluctantly.

“Did Vincenzo Montella agree with the transfer campaign? We shared everything, starting with such an aggressive transfer campaign.

“So much so that I’ve kept the enthusiastic messages he sent me, for example during the [Leonardo] Bonucci negotiation.

“I’m sorry for how it ended, both on a personal and professional level. If things went as they should have, Milan would be in the Champions League and he’d be in his place.”

Montella was sacked, with Gennaro Gattuso chosen to replace him.

“We needed to give a strong signal to the youngsters in terms of Milan DNA,” Mirabelli explained.

“Rino was chosen, full stop.

“He’s not a makeshift solution, I take responsibility and I’m happy with the way he’s working. It took hard work to improve, there were already aggravating circumstances in December.

“I’ve found someone who works even more than me.”
