Dries Mertens ended his goal drought after 910 minutes of Serie A football to give Napoli a huge win away to their taboo team Atalanta.
The Partenopei keep their status at the top of the table and overcome probably the toughest fixture in their calendar, having lost three of their previous four meetings with Gian Piero Gasperini’s men.
Mertens hadn’t found the net in nine rounds and picked the perfect time to break that drought, as he let a Jose Callejon through ball bounce and smashed it on the half-volley from a tight angle.
Andrea Masiello’s acrobatic defending prevented Mertens nodding in from point-blank range, while Marek Hamsik and Marko Rog missed sitters late on.
Pepe Reina also flew to palm a Bryan Cristante strike over the bar, but Napoli emerged with all three points from the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo.
