Benevento out-played Inter for long stretches at San Siro and had a strong penalty shout, but two headers gave the Nerazzurri a much-needed win.

This was probably the worst Nerazzurri performance of the season and it looked improbable they’d be able to get anything out of the game.

Roberto Gagliardini wasn’t even booked for a studs-up tackle on Sandro’s shin, while Samir Handanovic was decisive on Massimo Coda’s snapshot.

Le Streghe were the better team for an hour and had a very strong penalty shout waved away using VAR for Andrea Ranocchia’s challenge on Danilo Cataldi.

Moments later, Luciano Spalletti’s men took the lead against the run of play when a corner was flicked on for Milan Skriniar’s diving header.

Within three minutes, it was 2-0, as Joao Cancelo’s free kick found the head of Ranocchia for his first Serie A goal since December 2014.

Benevento ended the game with 10 men, as Nicolas Viola received two yellow cards.
