Pellegri joined Monaco from Genoa in a reported €25m deal at the end of January, although the forward’s chances of becoming Ligue 1’s youngest-ever goalscorer have been dented by a groin injury.

“The operation went well. Luckily the doctors think I could return by the end of April,” the 16-year-old told Premum Sport.

“It was great to meet [Cristiano] Ronaldo, he’s my idol along with Ibrahimovic. Monaco? My first have all been positive.

“Monaco are a great club. In Ligue 1, there’s plenty of space for young players. French football is a bit more physical than Serie A, but there’s less tactics involved

“My integration into the group was easy. Those who played in Italy have helped me with the language barrier.

“My primary objective is to come back as soon as possible. I’d like to score before May 10 so I can beat Mbappe, who holds the record for the youngest player to have scored in Ligue 1.

“My decision to join Monaco was made towards the end of January. It seemed the right leap in quality for my agent and I.

“The national team? I hope so. I’m Italian and the Azzurri shirt is the dream of every player.”
