Benevento Coach Roberto De Zerbi can’t help but have regrets after a 4-2 defeat to Juventus. “I’d love to start the season now.”

Le Streghe have very little chance of escaping the drop, as they’ve been rooted to the foot of the table all term, but the results have not always reflected the performances.

This afternoon they fought back twice to hold leaders Juventus, only to eventually capitulate 4-2 to a very soft Paulo Dybala penalty and Douglas Costa stunner.

“Today we struggled to get past the Juve pressing. We conceded four goals with two penalties and two world class finishes, so not a huge amount we could do,” De Zerbi told Sky Sport Italia.

“This team doesn’t belong at the foot of the table. The January signings improved our level, we had to build the fitness levels too and we achieved that.

“Unfortunately, the gap is now far too big. We want to honour the remaining seven rounds, but I’d love to start the season now in this form. It’s been an unlucky campaign.

“Safety isn’t impossible, but nearly. We’ll keep going until it’s mathematically decided – and beyond that, right to the end. We’ll honour the season.”
