The Blucerchiati currently sit in eighth place, three behind Milan and four adrift of Atalanta in sixth, so the Europa League spots are on the horizon.
“Being there and having the ambition to sit at the European table is something we should experience with enthusiasm, joy and the desire to amaze.
“It’s a difficult test, because Cagliari are fighting for Serie A survival, but we are motivated too and want to win. It’s not mathematically decisive yet, but in terms of confidence it may well be a fundamental match.
“We need patience, quality and speed of thought. Cagliari will be ready for battle and we must match them with added quality. We must never lose faith.
“The fans believe and so do we. These games are to be won together.”
There is an injury crisis to deal with, especially in attack, as Duvan Zapata, Caprari and Alvarez are all out of action.
“I spoke to Fabio Quagliarella before the game against Lazio and told him that if Samp are to achieve their objective, we need the best Quagliarella.
“I rested him for that trip to Rome because it was our third match in a week and we need him at his best in the final four rounds. He will be decisive for us in these closing stages of the season.”
