It is reported that captain Milan Badelj is considering changing his mind and signing a new contract to remain at Fiorentina.

The Croatian’s deal at the Artemio Franchi expires this summer, meaning he is free to leave the Viola for nothing at the end of the season.

It had appeared this was a formality, with the 29-year-old refusing to put pen-to-paper on a new contract and comments by his agent that it was ‘time’ for him to move on.

However, Corriere Fiorentino reports that the midfielder is pondering a U-turn in his decision.

However, Corriere Fiorentino reports that the midfielder is pondering a U-turn in his decision.

Badelj, who received a standing ovation after being substituted in last weekend’s 3-0 win over Napoli, is said to have begun reconsidering his next move in the days following the sudden death of his teammate, Davide Astori.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Badelj took on the responsibility of the captain’s armband and with it, the leadership of a team stricken with grief.

It is thought that the former Hamburg man now feels a sense of attachment and belonging at Fiorentina, causing him to consider extending his stay at the club he joined in 2014.
