Gianluigi Buffon risks missing out on his Italy swansong after he was charged by UEFA over comments about referee Michael Oliver.

The Juventus goalkeeper was charged with breaching UEFA’s “general principles of conduct” for his statements following the Champions League semi-final exit to Real Madrid.

The verdict is expected on May 31, but La Gazzetta dello Sport is concerned this could spill over into his international career.

As the season will be over by then at club level and Buffon is expected to hang up his gloves, a Champions League ban would make no real difference in this case.

The concern is that UEFA will instead impose a ban over a period of time, as that would cover Italy’s friendly games.

Buffon had been ready to hang up his Azzurri gloves in a match against the Netherlands on June 4, which was organised at Turin’s Juventus Stadium to act as his swansong.
