Palermo have beaten 10-man Venezia to reach the Serie B promotion play-off final, where they’ll face Frosinone or Cittadella.

The first leg ended 1-1 at the Stadio Penzo, so as the Rosanero had a superior position at the end of the close season, they would go through with a draw or win.

Pippo Inzaghi’s Lagunari needed the victory within 90 minutes and there was no room for extra time.

The other semi-final is this evening between Frosinone and Cittadella.

Palermo took the lead through a frankly bizarre goal, as Andrea Rispoli’s attempted shot turned into an accidental assist for Aleksandar Trajkovski, whose effort was then parried from point-blank range only to ricochet into the net off Maurizio Domizzi’s shin.

Alberto Pomini denied an immediate equaliser with his save on Marco Pinato’s impressive volley, while Emil Audero fingertipped a Radoslaw Murawski low drive round the base of the upright.

The 37-year-old Palermo goalkeeper Pomini flew to palm a Marco Modolo header over, used his legs to deny an Alex Geijo free header and was at full stretch on a Leo Stulac snooker shot.

Unbalanced, Venezia started to lose their focus and saw Pinato sent off for a straight red card offence on Mato Jajalo.

Palermo were ready to double their lead when Domizzi brought down La Gumina, but the youngster had his penalty saved by Emil Audero.
