Lazio have reportedly opened talks with Gelson Martins over signing the former Sporting CP winger.

Corriere dello Sport builds on a report in last week’s Il Messaggero, noting Lazio are assessing whether there is scope for a deal to be struck.

Martins was one of several Sporting players who terminated their contracts after the club’s training ground was infiltrated by masked thugs.

The newspaper warns the Aquile face competition from Arsenal and Benfica for the Portugal international, while their current highest salary of €2-2.5m plus bonuses would ‘hardly satisfy’ the 23-year-old.

Furthermore, while he is expected to win his contract case with the Lisbon side, there is still the risk that he may lose, leaving his former club liable for ‘millions’.

Nonetheless, Il Corriere concludes his ‘dribbling, assists, goals and bursts of pace’ make him an ideal replacement for Felipe Anderson, who is close to joining West Ham United.

Martins, who is with the Portugal team in Russia for the World Cup, scored 13 times and set up as many in 53 appearances for Sporting last season.
