Defending champions Germany crashed out of the World Cup, after a shock 2-0 defeat to South Korea in Kazan.

Die Mannschaft are the fourth of the last five world champions to fail to get out of the group at the next tournament, after France in 2002, Italy in 2010 and Spain in 2014.

Joachim Low’s side went in to the match on the back of a dramatic last-gasp win over Sweden, so knew they just had to avoid defeat to have a chance of making the Last 16.

That relied on Mexico beating Sweden, whereas if the Scandinavian side were to win it would come down to goal difference.

On a hot day in Kazan, the Germans started in sluggish fashion with South Korea waiting to hit them on the break.

Marco Reus should have played in Timo Werner on the left, but he attempted to cross to Leon Goretzka and the ball was cut out.

Manuel Neuer looked uncharacteristically shaky, and he spilled a long-range free-kick, only to gather just before Son Heung-min turned it in.

Germany looked more and more ragged as the first half wore on, and began to appear positively panicked when Sweden took the lead against Mexico.

Andreas Granqvist made it 2-0 from the spot in that one, and the grumbles from the German fans were audible.

Low threw on Mario Gomez and Thomas Muller, as Germany went all-out for a goal.

The former Fiorentina striker had a headed chance, but put it straight at Cho in the Korean goal.

Germany threw more and more players desperately forward, and began to leave gaps at the back.

Then, with 92 minutes gone, they were dealt a hammer blow. Kim Young-gwon appeared to be offside as he poked home from a corner, but a VAR check showed

Toni Kroos had played the ball to him.

Neuer moved forward to play essentially in midfield, and the goalkeeper ended up handing South Korea another goal.

Ju tackled the Bayern Munich man in midfield, slipped the ball through for Son, and the Spurs man raced through to score.

It was a measure of Neuer’s position that Son was onside because he started in his own half.

The result means Germany go out of the World Cup at the Group Stage for the first time since 1938.
