Luka Modric believes his Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo will remain at the Bernabeu, rather than join Juventus.

The Portuguese forward has been heavily linked with a transfer to Turin ever since his country were knocked out of the World Cup by Uruguay last weekend.

A fee in the region of €100m appears close to being agreed between the clubs, although Madrid President Florentino Perez may yet raise his asking price a little further.

However, Modric still does not believe the 33-year-old will be leaving the Spanish capital anytime soon.

“We’ll see what happens. I don’t think he will leave,” Croatia captain Modric told reporters after his country secured a place in the World Cup semi-finals.

“I hope he stays because he is the best player in the world, he means a lot and we hope he remains with us.

“I think he’ll stay, that is my opinion.

“It would be great if he stayed because I can’t imagine him playing for any other team in Europe.”
