Gian Piero Gasperini’s side went into the match knowing they had to win, or score at least three away goals.

The Orobici got off to the best possible start, taking the lead after just four minutes.

Gomez sent in a corner from the left, which almost went straight in at the near post, and it was scrambled clear by goalkeeper Bojan Pavolovic.

Krste Velkoski’s attempted clearance was sliced up in the air though, and Jose Palomino rose to head it home from close range.

Atalanta captain Gomez made it 2-0 shortly after with a stunning goal, cutting in from the left flank before curling it into the far corner on his right.

Incredibly it was 3-0 inside 20 minutes, Musa Barrow chesting down for Andrea Masiello to smash home a half-volley.

Having blown a 2-0 first leg lead, the Bergamo side were in no mood to take their foot of the gas.

Gomez chested down a high ball in the centre of midfield, and surged forward between two Sarajevo players.

The Argentine shot from range, and though Pavlovic got a hand to it he couldn’t keep out the fierce strike.

Palomino got a brace of his own, converting on the half-volley from Gomez’s corner just before the break.

Atalanta didn’t let up in the second half, and when Pavlovic could only parry Hans Hateboer’s cross up in the air, Musa Barrow was on hand to convert with an overhead kick.

Gomez was instrumental once again for the seventh goal, sending a delightful lofted ball out to Hateboer, who headed down for substitute Duvan Zapata.

The Colombian couldn’t find room to shoot, but he laid it off for Barrow who duly fired into the far corner.

The young striker got his hat-trick on 87 minutes to complete a rout for Atalanta, who win 10-2 on aggregate.
