Davide Ballardini has asked to see “more quality in possession” as Genoa make their Coppa Italia debut against Lecce this evening.

The third round tie is a one-off match and kicks off at Marassi at 20.15 UK time.

“It is Genoa’s duty and pleasure to target a long Coppa Italia campaign and try to go as far as possible. This is an important competition,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“It is Genoa’s duty and pleasure to target a long Coppa Italia campaign and try to go as far as possible. This is an important competition,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“I do think the format should change, because the current rules favour those six or eight top clubs, making them struggle only in the semi-finals and Final. Genoa are in there with another 12-13 sides.”

New signing Andrea Favilli arrived from Juventus, but he is suspended in the Coppa Italia, while Sandro and Iuri Medeiros are absent.

“As things stand, I think we have a complete squad. There are some lads who could leave and we did lose players like Mattia Perin, Armando Izzo and Andrea Bertolacci, but on the other hand those who arrived see Genoa as a dream come true.

“I want to see more quality in possession and the desire to win back the ball in the opposition half. Those are the areas we need to improve on. Pre-season is over, it’s time to put the chatter aside and do our talking on the pitch.

“I hope that each of us gives our best both as men and sportsmen for the good of Genoa.”
