“Icardi had a fitness problem yesterday, so did Lautaro, so as they were in the 24 hours before the game, we didn’t want to take any risks,” the director of sport told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ve got a player like Keita, who was signed precisely for this sort of situation and to ensure the quality level remained very high indeed.
There is Radja Nainggolan in the starting XI for his Inter debut after the transfer from Roma.

“Nainggolan unfortunately missed all of pre-season with this injury, but he has this experience, determination and hunger that means he’s raring to go.”

Joao Mario was meant to leave, but Inter couldn’t find a club to pay his €40m price-tag.

“The Coach has many resources at his disposal and the time will come for all of them. The system today has two midfielders plus Nainggolan, but with Borja Valero, Matias Vecino, Roberto Gagliardini and more, our midfield is complete. It might be structured a little different to others, but it is complete.

“We have to stay together and keep growing. I see the work of the staff every day and feel very confident. A bad start can happen, but if you have a clear project and the confidence in it, then we can recover.

“I want to reassure all our fans, as in the long-term we cannot help but reap the rewards of the quality, experience and vision of this squad. I am convinced of that.”
