Torino chief Urbano Cairo is the next Serie A President to demand reform of VAR ‘so Coaches or captains get at least one review a game’.

Speaking to Radio Anch’io Sport on Sunday, Cairo was unhappy with the referee’s refusal to consult the VAR during Toro’s 3-2 win against Frosinone, claiming his side had been ‘penalised heavily by misuse of the technology’

“It makes me angry when the referees don’t use the VAR,” he remarked.

“It’s absurd that the VAR is there and the referees don’t use them. I was convinced by VAR and was happy with its introduction, even if we were initially penalised by it, but it was a new tool that we were still getting to know.

“However, if after a year we’re still where we started, with referees who decide not to consult the VAR…

“The fact of not wanting to use the VAR seems incredible to me. We were penalised heavily last season, so it’s a serious issue.

“We have 12 points and we’re three points away from the Champions League, but the referees have angered us in four of our eight games, from the penalty not given to Iago Falque against Roma to Berenguer’s sensational goal ruled out for an offside that wasn’t there and a red card not given to Koulibaly.

“There was also a goal given to Frosinone on Friday, which shouldn’t have counted as there was a foul on the goalkeeper.

“With those three extra points, we’d be level with Lazio. I understand that it takes time for VAR to be understood, but its use should be extended so Coaches or captains get at least one review a game.

“I believe in it a lot, but if it’s there then let’s use it more.”
